The International Maritime Conference in Brussels in 1853 resulted in initial steps for standardization in the making and recording of weather and ocean observations, and also led to the First International Meteorological Congress in Vienna in 1873. In particular, it looks at the introduction of “maritime safety information”, the establishment of METAREAs globally, the development of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Worldwide Met-Ocean Information and Warning Service and their place in the IMO Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
